Albendazole dosage for animals

Albendazole is dosed by body weight, so an accurate weight and the right product concentration are everything. Use the calculator, then check your figure against the reference table and the product label.

Reference dose rates by species

The figures below reflect commonly published label doses using an 11.36% oral suspension (113.6 mg/mL). Volumes are per 100 lb of body weight and are rounded.

SpeciesTypical rateVolume (11.36%)Regulatory status
Cattle (beef)10 mg/kg~4.0 mL / 100 lbFDA-approved
Sheep7.5 mg/kg~3.0 mL / 100 lbFDA-approved
Goats10 mg/kg~4.0 mL / 100 lbExtra-label · vet-directed
Horses~8.8 mg/kg~3.5 mL / 100 lbPer product label
Alpacas / Llamas~10 mg/kg~4.0 mL / 100 lbExtra-label · vet-directed

Some parasites — adult liver flukes in particular — may call for a higher rate than routine worming. Only increase a dose on veterinary advice.

How to read the label and get the volume right

Two numbers turn a milligram dose into a real syringe volume:

1. The dose rate (mg/kg)

This is how many milligrams of albendazole each kilogram of animal needs. Multiply it by the animal’s weight in kilograms to get the total dose in milligrams.

2. The concentration (mg/mL)

This tells you how concentrated the liquid is. An 11.36% suspension contains 113.6 mg in every millilitre. Divide the total dose by this number to get the volume to draw into the syringe or drench gun.

Weigh, don’t guess. Estimating weight by eye is the most common dosing error. Under-dosing lets parasites survive and builds resistance across your whole herd; over-dosing wastes product and raises toxicity risk.

Withdrawal times

The withdrawal period is the time that must pass between the last dose and slaughter or milk sale. Using treated meat or milk too early can leave illegal residues. Always take the exact figure from your product label; extra-label use extends these periods.
