What albendazole treats in animals
Albendazole’s appeal is its breadth: one benzimidazole dewormer that reaches roundworms, lungworms, tapeworms and adult liver flukes. Here’s what it handles — and where its limits are.
Gastrointestinal roundworms
The workhorse target. Albendazole clears adult stomach and intestinal worms — including barber’s pole worm, brown stomach worm and cooperia-type species — that drain condition, cause scours and, with barber’s pole worm, dangerous anemia.
Lungworms
Adult lungworms cause the deep, persistent cough seen in grazing cattle and small ruminants. Clearing them restores appetite and growth and reduces secondary pneumonia risk.
Tapeworms
Ruminant tapeworms (Moniezia) show up as segments in manure and can affect young stock. Tapeworm activity is a genuine advantage of albendazole over many other dewormers.
Adult liver flukes
In cattle, albendazole treats adult liver fluke (Fasciola hepatica), a serious parasite on wet pastures. Note it targets adult flukes — not the immature stages — so timing within the fluke season matters.
Where albendazole fits — and where it doesn’t
Albendazole is broad, but it isn’t everything. Knowing its edges keeps your parasite program effective.
- Adult flukes only. It doesn’t reliably kill immature liver flukes, so acute fluke disease may need a different flukicide.
- Internal parasites, not external. It won’t control lice, mites, ticks or flies — those need a separate product.
- Resistance is real. Where benzimidazole resistance has built up, worms may survive. Faecal egg-count testing tells you whether it’s still working on your farm.
A good deworming plan rotates chemical classes and doses only when testing shows it’s needed — not on a blind calendar. Your vet can build one around your pasture and parasites.
Which animals is it used in?
Albendazole is FDA-approved for cattle and sheep in the United States. It’s also used extra-label — under veterinary direction — in goats, alpacas and llamas, and in some regions in other species. Approvals and available products differ by country, so check what’s registered where you are.
Animal use only. Veterinary albendazole products are formulated and dosed for animals. Never give a veterinary product to a person.
