Safety & precautions

Using albendazole safely

Albendazole is well established in livestock, but a handful of rules matter every single time — around pregnancy, dosing, and the meat and milk that leave your farm.

The pregnancy rule comes first. Albendazole can cause birth defects if given in early pregnancy. Do not treat cattle in the first 45 days of gestation (or within 45 days of removing bulls), or ewes in the first 30 days. When in doubt about breeding status, wait or ask your vet.

Possible side effects

At correct doses albendazole is usually well tolerated. Reactions are uncommon and generally mild, but can include:

  • Temporary reduced appetite or mild lethargy shortly after dosing
  • Soft manure for a day or two
  • Rare hypersensitivity, or signs of toxicity if the animal is badly over-dosed

If a treated animal becomes dull, goes off feed for more than a day, or shows any severe reaction, stop and call your veterinarian.

Contraindications & cautions

  • Early pregnancy — avoid during the risk windows above.
  • Very sick or debilitated animals — treat the underlying illness first and dose on veterinary advice.
  • Dairy animals — approved products are typically not for female dairy cattle of breeding age; milk withdrawal may not be established.
  • Extra-label species — goats, camelids and others should only be treated under veterinary direction.

Meat & milk withdrawal

Withdrawal periods keep drug residues out of the food supply. Take the exact number from your product label; extra-label use lengthens it. As a reference, approved cattle products commonly cite a meat withdrawal near 27 days and sheep near 7 days. For extra-label withdrawals in the US, your vet can consult FARAD.

Handling & storage

  • Shake suspensions well and dose with a calibrated syringe or drench gun
  • Store as directed on the label, away from heat and sunlight, and keep out of reach of children and pets
  • Wear gloves, avoid skin and eye contact, and wash up after dosing
  • Dispose of empty containers according to local regulations
